Loanwords

A representation of words that are remixes of loaned words in the English language
Loanwords was created in a great collaboration with Jasmine Nackash.
A loanword is a word at least partly assimilated from one language (the donor language) into another language (the recipient language). Experts estimate that around 80% of words in the English language are loanwords. This project produces new loanwords that are remixes of loanwords whose letters are converted into symbols that represent the sound they make in multiple languages. Each petri dish generates a new word every three minutes.
Created using Unity, and C#.

The project uses a Markov chain probability model to generate words off of a list of loanwords in the English language. It then displays the word’s letters by order of appearance. Each letter has a symbol representing it, that is derived from the sound that letter makes and its corresponding typographic symbol in a variety of different languages. Each symbol has its own simulated physical properties that affect its movement and allows for unique interplay between the different letters of each word. The program generates a new word every 30 sec.
